Georgia Ragsdale to perform at Cleveland HRC dinner

by Jean Tutolo

Attendees at the 1996 Cleveland Human Rights Campaign annual dinner, on April 13 at the Marriott Society Center will be entertained by Georgia Ragsdale, the first openly lesbian performer ever to be signed for her own television program. Ragsdale was discovered by talent scouts from ABC Productions as she performed at a Los Angeles comedy club.

After touring the country doing stand-up comedy for five years, Ragsdale has been tapped to develop and star in her own halfhour situation comedy on ABC. Her television character, however, will not be lesbian.

Bracing for the possible suggestion that she is selling out, Ragsdale says, “If God came down and said I could only be an entertainer or a gay person, I would choose to be an entertainer. And as far as the roles I play, it has nothing to do with being gay. I'm gay, so what? I'm an actress. This is my job. I can do more for the gay community as a TV star than a gay stand-up comic."

Situation comedies which feature independent women in leading roles are receiving high ratings. Television successes such as Roseanne, Mad About You, Grace Under Fire, and Ellen demonstrate that there is a large audience that wants to see non-traditional women in starring roles.

says.

Ragsdale, a frequent headliner at political events from Provincetown to San Francisco, will serve as master of Ceremonies for the 1996 Cleveland Human Rights Campaign dinner. Over 500 people are expected to attend the event. Elizabeth Birch, the executive director of HRC, will speak at the event, as will former Senator Howard Metzenbaum, who will be honored for his longtime support of the gay and lesbian community.

The Human Rights Campaign is the country's largest lesbian and gay political organization. Money raised at the April fund-raiser will be used at the national level to fight for the issues that are most important to lesbian and
